The Tongariro River is considered one of the best fly fishing rivers. It has a reputation amongst anglers not only for the size, numbers and strength of fish but also for the challenge they present.
Most of the Upper Tongariro is only accessible by raft.
This wilderness section of the river, with its crystal clear pools and unspoiled runs, gets minimal angling pressure compared to the Lower Tongariro and can, therefore, deliver exceptional fishing.
The Upper Tongariro River is open to anglers from November 1st to May 31st each year. For anglers seeking uncrowded waters and large numbers of quality fighting fish, this is trout heaven.
Meet us in the morning at our rafting base in Turangi to get everything prepared before heading out to the start of the Upper Tongariro section.
Raft Fishing on the Tongariro River is the perfect day out; enjoy the beautiful scenery, native wildlife like the Blue Duck, a delicious river lunch and of course plenty of pools to cast.

A Lake Taupo Fishing licence is required. Please make sure you buy it online before arriving at our base.
